The Threat Is Real — And Growing
AI voice cloning technology has advanced to the point where a scammer can replicate anyone's voice from just a few seconds of audio — a voicemail greeting, a social media video, or even a phone call.
These cloned voices are then used to call family members, often pretending to be a grandchild in distress: "Grandma, I'm in trouble. I need money right now. Please don't tell Mom and Dad."
How Voice Cloning Works
- Audio collection — Scammers find voice samples from social media, voicemail greetings, or recorded calls.
- AI processing — Software analyzes the voice's unique characteristics (tone, pitch, cadence, accent).
- Real-time generation — The scammer types or speaks, and the AI outputs audio that sounds exactly like the target person.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Urgency and secrecy — "Don't tell anyone, just send money now."
- Unusual requests — Wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
- Emotional manipulation — Claims of arrest, accident, or kidnapping.
- Poor call quality — Scammers may use bad connections to mask imperfections.
- Inability to answer personal questions — Ask something only the real person would know.
How to Protect Yourself
Create a Family Code Word
Establish a secret word or phrase that only your family knows. If someone calls claiming to be a relative in distress, ask for the code word.
Always Verify Independently
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the person directly using a number you already have saved.
Limit Voice Exposure Online
Be cautious about posting videos or audio publicly on social media.
Tell Your Family
Make sure everyone in your family knows about this scam, especially those who might be targeted.
What to Do If You're Targeted
- Don't send money — No matter how convincing the call seems.
- Hang up and verify — Call the person directly.
